CSS Teams Compete at Great Oaks National Qualifier

Two weekends ago, the teams of Berkley, Troy, DCD, and Birmingham (BPS) traveled to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the Great Oaks National Qualifier.

Sailors were met with extremely trying conditions as winds ranged from just 0.5 to 4 mph, barely meeting the minimum threshold for racing. Despite spending over 10 hours on the water, only six races were completed throughout the weekend.

While the light air made for a challenging regatta, our sailors gained valuable experience in one of the most difficult conditions in sailing—staying fast when there’s almost no wind.

In the end, our BPS team of Ryan and Sydney rose to the occasion, finishing 3rd overall and qualifying for the Great Oaks National Championship in New Orleans next month.

This marks CSS’s fifth consecutive year sending teams to Nationals — and BPS’s first time ever qualifying!
